Thank you for wanting to make an impact in your local LGBTQIA+ community! We have a variety of ways to get involved. If you don’t see what you’re interested in here, you can always contact us with your thoughts on how you can help!
Social Media
The first thing you can do is follow us on social media! Each time you follow, comment, share, or repost our content, you’re increasing our reach and helping spread our message. Even searching us on Google is beneficial!
If you love social media, you might be willing to post content for us or even create it yourself. No professional experience necessary – though if you do have a background in digital marketing, definitely let us know!
How about Canva? We would love to have the help of someone familiar with this design tool to create projects for our social media posts and event announcements.
The time commitment for these roles would start at just a few hours per month. If any of this sounds like a good fit for you, send us a message!
Support Group Meetings
Attend our Support Groups: Yes, you can have an impact just by attending our support groups! Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or the loved one of someone who is, you have the knowledge that comes with experience. Your perspective can be hugely beneficial to someone attending our support groups for the first time. Plus, who knows, you might learn something or make a new friend!
Facilitate a Support Group: We need volunteers to lead support groups for LGBTQIA+ teens, adults, and friends/family/allies. Our facilitators are trained in welcoming attendees, opening the meeting with guidelines and introductions, and then supporting the conversation and needs of our attendees. The goal of facilitating is not to have all the answers, but rather to encourage attendees to help each other. Facilitators are able to decide which monthly support groups they are available for and which they aren’t. If you’re interested in learning more about facilitator opportunities and our next scheduled facilitator training, send us a message.
Board Membership
Our chapter is entirely led by volunteer board members, and we could always use a new board member who cares about our work. We would especially love to have a gender non-conforming board member.
Board members will need to pay membership dues of $25 and be able to regularly attend board meetings. While not set in stone, our board meetings are typically held every other month on Zoom on Saturday mornings and last roughly two hours. Board members should also be familiar with PFLAG and our chapter and should hopefully be able to help with chapter events. If you have an interest in being a board member, send us a message!
Advocacy Work
Our community needs everyday folks just like you to speak to legislators, media, and even our own neighbors about the importance of protecting LGBTQ+ people from discrimination, harassment, and harm. Whether you are an LGBTQ+ person, a parent, a business leader, a teacher, a law enforcement officer, a faith leader, or simply an ally, you can have an impact. Advocacy takes many forms, including writing letters to lawmakers and being interviewed by news organizations. You are in control of how much time you spend and how much visibility you have in this process, and all voices are important. Starting is as simple as filling out this short form or sending us a message!
Periodic Help
Not all volunteer roles require a regular commitment! Let us know if you would willing to be contacted when we need extra help for things such as:
- Being a panelist at one of our education events and speaking about your own personal or professional experience
- Volunteering at our booth at public outreach events
- Shuttling volunteers to and from events with limited parking, such as Atlanta Pride
Local Businesses
If you own or work for a local business and would be willing to provide a service or product, especially one at low cost, we would love to hear from you! Examples include:
- Businesses that can host a PFLAG social event, such as coffee shops, pottery painting, or private event spaces
- Lawyers who can offer our chapter pro bono legal advice
- Photographers, makeup artists, or hair stylists happy to work a glam night event for trans and non-binary folks
- Restaurants or caterers who can cater box lunches or a thank you dinner for our volunteers
We are always grateful for the generous support we receive. Thank you for Leading with Love!
